How to Get Traffic to Your Blog: SEO Blog Post Tips

SEO for Blog Posts: How to Get Traffic to Your Blog

1.    Title Tag

Okay, so this goes without saying, but the title of your blog post should be SEO optimized.

When you type a keyword/phrase into the search engine, the search engine will typically come up with a list of results that they believe to be the most relevant to your search.

Google in response to the searcher’s search term will list10 of their most relevant results on the first page of search results. So, from here, they will then see a list of 10 different blog post titles to browse through.

So What Should a Title Tag Include?

Your title tag should comprise of two elements…

  1. Your SEO blog post title
  2. Your brand name

For example…

Essentially your SEO title should go first followed by a dash (-) or pipe (|) separating it from it’s brand name.

SEO Blog Post Tips: Title Tag

  • Less than 70 characters
  • Uses a med to high traffic, low targeted keyword
  • Gives incentive to the reader i.e. what are you offering them, what are you teaching them, what will they get out of it?
  • Summarises your blog post content in an enticing and thought provoking way.

2.    Blog URL

Many people don’t realise the exact power of a blog post URL.

When Google analyses the search term that people type into the search bar, Google also takes into account the URL as it helps them to identify what your blog post is about.

With your blog URL having the potential to increase blog traffic based on it’s SEO optimization, you will need to make sure that your blog post URLs have/don’t have.

For example…

#1 Clean URLs

www.curatedbymichelle.com/10-18-2019/234bs763kd0/6-part-anatomy-of-a-SEO-blog-post vs.

www.curatedbymichelle.com/6-part-anatomy-SEO-blog-post

See the difference?

Not only is the first URL example very cluttered and difficult for readers to remember should they want to go back to your blog post again in the future, but Google hates blog post URLs that contain unnecessary information.

So, if you want the best chance of having an increase in blog traffic, if you haven’t done so already, you’ve got to change your permalink structure.

For those using WordPress, the you can change the permalink structure by going to your WordPress.org dashboard, go to the LHS sidebar and click on Settings > Permalinks and then click on the permalink option ‘post name’.

#2 SEO Optimized

Due to the fact that search engines such as Google uses a blog post’s URL to determine what an article is about, it is highly important that you include your traffic boosting SEO keyword here.

For example, one of my SEO keywords is SEO blog post, hence my URL is www.curatedbymichelle.com/6-part-anatomy-SEO-blog-post.

Don’t neglect to use every bit of your blog post’s SEO optimization abilities to really give your blog post an increase in blog traffic!

SEO Blog Tips: SEO-Friendly URLs

  • Use keywords in URLs but don’t go overboard
  • Keep it short and easy to remember
  • Include dashes in between for word separation and not any other symbol

3. Meta Description

Now, for the next section of my SEO for blog posts guide, I will be talking about the meta description. This refers to the small piece of text that is found right below your title tag and blog post URL when you have your list of search results.

In general, a meta description is a small snippet of info that summarises your article and tells other people exactly why they should be clicking on your blog post as opposed to all the numerous other blog posts.

And the higher your CTR (click through rate), the more valuable search engines will think your website and blog content is!

So not only should your meta description entice readers to open up, but it should be keyword rich (but not stuffed!) because you need to appeal to both the reader and to search engines in order to receive maximum results!

Why is a Meta Description Important?

So, the reason why a meta description is important is because if your meta description is optimized with SEO keyword relevant to your blog post, then Google will be able to better understand what your blog post is essentially about and whether or not your blog post content is relevant to the searcher’s intent.

In addition, a good meta description needs to not only succinctly tell your readers what your blog post is about in approximately two sentences, but it has to be enticing enough to persuade readers to click on your blog post and keep reading!

It is so important to generate your own personal meta description because if you don’t purposefully create your own meta description, Google and all those other search engines will automatically create a meta description for you. They do this by just simply extracting texts from within your blog post content and displaying them on search engine results.

By relying on Google to extract random ‘relevant’ texts from your blog post directly, you will be losing out on a large chunk of SEO potential and decrease your CTR.

SEO Blog Tips: Meta Description

  • Aim for less than 160 characters long (but over 120)
  • Contains 2-3 SEO keywords
  • Uses a call to action word action to get people clicking through
  • Entice readers by telling them exactly what they will be getting out of your blog post

But…

Sometimes, Google doesn’t always show your carefully crafted SEO optimized meta description. So, in order to combat this scenario, make sure that the majority of your blog posts are greater than 1,500 words and totally SEO optimized with good, relevant keywords, thus helping you to increase blog traffic and gain more readers.

This is because, Google sometimes may dynamically just choose to extract random snippets of text from your blog post if they believe that the snippets that they should will have a better answer to the search query.

Essentially, they will compare your meta description to your blog post content and see which one is a better fit to answer their searcher’s intent and offer up the one that they think is more relevant and helpful.

So, in order to make sure that your meta description is up to snuff, it is best to ensure that your entire blog post’s content is optimized.

SEO Blog Tips: Meta Description for Search Queries

  • Use Google Analytics to discover which keywords are being used to direct traffic to your website/blog post and incorporate those keywords into your meta description instead to see if that helps to increase your CTR
  • Do a little bit of ‘Sherlocking’ around and check out exactly what the top search results are for your targeted keywords and try and see if there are styles that you can mimic to boost your CTR

4. Create Long Form Content

There is absolutely no fixed ‘ideal length’ a blog post should be.

But, there have been studies showing that long form content consistently ranked at the top of search results.

For example, according to Backlinko the average wordcount of the first page of search engine results is 1,890.

This is just one of the many high authority SEO blogs that show research proving that long form content tend to fare better in search engine ranks compared to short form content.

And it makes sense!

I mean, if a blog post is only 800 words long, then not only will you only have 800 words to tell Google what your blog post is about, but Google will think that you are offering less value to readers because an 800 word is unlikely to be as helpful as a 2000+ word guide.

SEO Blog Post Tips: How to Increase Post Length

  • Don’t just tell your readers what to do. Show them step by step how they can do it! And if you want to take it a step further, give them examples!
  • Always ask yourself what else your can offer your readers i.e. a bonus tip?
  • Never forget to explain to your readers exactly why each piece of information that you are giving your readers is important. This is because simply giving them advice without really demonstrating why it is beneficial to them is useless!
  • Give your readers actionable measures that they can take and feel free to break down those steps into smaller, more detailed steps for a more comprehensive guide.
  • Lay out your blog post in an easy to read and digestible manner. For example, break up your text with bullet points, bolded headings, images and paragraphs.

5. H1 Tag

For those of you who don’t know, the H1 tag is the main heading of your blog post straight after your title tag.

And the reason why an H1 tag is important is because it helps Google and other search engines identify what your blog post is essentially all about.

Don’t believe me?

A study conducted by Moz “Page-Level Keyword & Content-Based Metrics” shows that they believe that the H1 element is the 3rd most significant factor to ranking high in Google’s algorithm.

SEO Blog Post Tips: H1 Tags

  • Only ever use ONE H1 tag on each blog post
  • Include 1-3 SEO keywords within your H1 tag and make it like your SEO title tag, but slightly longer and descriptive
  • The ideal length is somewhere between 30-70 characters
  • Make sure that your H1 tag is easily readable, is bolded, and has a much larger font size compared to the rest of your body text.

6. Image Optimization

Want to know one of the most obvious ways on how to get traffic to your blog?

SEO optimize your blog images.

By optimizing your images, this can have a massive difference to your blog post’s traffic. This is because searching by content isn’t the only way people find what they need.

For example, Pinterest is an image driven SEO search engine that many bloggers find to be one of the most powerful traffic drivers. PLUS searching for images on Google is another popular method people use to find content that they like.

So, to make full use of this SEO blog tip, overall, there are five main ways you can optimize your images, and I have detailed how you should be using each one to maximize your SEO potential below…

Alt Text

Ensure that all your images have SEO keywords in the alt text section so that search engines will be able to identify exactly what your images are about.

Stick to approximately 3-4 relevant keywords (Google now negatively strikes against blogs who keyword stuff their images) and separate each one by a comma i.e. blog post SEO, blog post SEO tips, how to drive blog traffic etc.

Caption

What many people don’t do is include a caption beneath their images. I personally love this aspect of optimizing my blog post because not only does it tell my readers what the image is about, but it is a great way to incorporate SEO keywords into your blog post that might otherwise look too much like keyword stuffing.

Image File Name

don’t neglect to make sure that when you save your image, you save it with a relevant name that is preferably also a keyword! For example, if you have an image of a Labrador, instead of the image being afo0923.jpg, call it labradorpuppy.jpg etc.

File Size

The larger your file size, the longer it will take to load on your web page. It is not always possible, but try and keep it under 200kb with image compression via sites such as tinypng.com or tinyjpg.com.

Not only will a large file size negatively affect user experience, but due to bad user experience, Google will deduct points off your site’s user friendliness. So, as a consequence, Google will be less likely to promote your blog to their searchers.

Image Style

When you are creating images for your blog post, you need to be thinking about a lot of things in order to really squeeze maximum SEO potential out of your blog content.

And one of these things is your image style. For maximum SEO potential and increase blog traffic, it is important that…

  • You brand your images according to your blog style (even better if you include your home blog URL at the bottom i.e. curatedbymichelle.com)
  • You include multiple Pinterest sized images i.e. 600 x 900 pixels so that you can rank high according to Pinterest’s SEO algorithm.
