How to Use Google Keyword Planner
Every blogger seriously thinking about growing their traffic and building their blog into a profitable business knows the Google Keyword Planner Tool like the back of their hand. And I for one am no exception. So why am I such a massive fan of this resource from Google?
- Google is the largest search engine out there, so the SEO analysis that they provide is gathered from the widest audience base.
- It is super simple to use and best of all…
- It’s 100% FREE!
But how do you begin using Google Keyword Planner for SEO purposes to boost traffic and grow your audience? Well, the majority of bloggers out there know how important it is to grow blog traffic in order to effectively monetize your site, but learning how to properly use the Google Keyword search tool can be a little tricky at first to figure out.
One of the most common mistakes that beginner bloggers make when they first try to use the Google Keyword search tool is that they give up the moment Google tried to make them create an ad. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry! This is a common mistake that many people make/have made – including me.
What are Keywords?
Even if you are just a beginner blogger, you would have most likely come across keywords and what they are all about. However, on the off chance that you haven’t, let me be the first one to educate you on exactly what they are and why they are important.
When you are searching for something on Google (or any other search engine for that matter), you will likely type a keyword or keyword phrase into the search bar. From there, the search engine will try very hard to bring you with what they think is the most relevant and helpful content based on the keywords/keyword phrases that each article uses. So, when you use popular keywords in your content, it makes it far easier for your audience to find you online. How sweet is that?
If your blog post doesn’t include any SEO keywords, then the likelihood of people finding your content online decreases exponentially. This is exactly the reason why I don’t ever write blog posts without researching which keywords I want to use first.

How to Use Google Keyword Planner
1. Sign in
Before you can even begin using Google Keyword Planner for SEO purposes, the very first step on how to use the Google Keyword Planner is to simply create an account if you haven’t got one already. If you have found yourself stuck in the past because you felt forced to create an ad in order to use the Google Keyword search tool, this is likely where the process went haywire.
You do not have to pay for a Google ad in order to use the Google Keyword Planner. If you have already tried starting your own account but found yourself stuck, a good way to start ‘afresh’ is to simply go into ‘incognito’ mode and open a new ‘incognito window’. This will then allow you to search for keywords as if you have no history, and so, you will be able to access the Google Keyword Planner tool as if you have never accessed it before.
Once you have done that, click ‘start now. But once you are on the ‘start now’ page, do not enter your information. Rather, click on ‘skip the guided setup’ which can be found above the area where you are asked to enter your email information. Now, when you make it onto the next page, you can then fill out your information and create your Google Adwords account to access the search tool!
2. Find the Google Keyword Planner tool
On the top right hand corner, click the wrench icon and then under the ‘Planning’ section, click on ‘Keyword Planner’. And on the next page, click on ‘Find Keywords’. This should then effectively bring you to the Google Keyword Planner tool where you can begin trying to find the best SEO keywords you should be using for your next blog post.
3. Enter your topic keywords
If you want to find out a list of SEO keywords that is relevant to your topic and see which SEO keywords are the most popular and the easiest to actually rank highly on search engines for, begin by thinking about what the main topic of your blog post is. Now, enter topic keywords into the box and click ‘Get Started’.
4. Sort your results by relevance
Once you have reached this stage, you will come across a screen that shows a very long list of SEO keywords and phrases related to the topic keywords you entered into the box. From there, you can begin sorting through the long list of them. However, I highly recommend that you do a little extra work so that you can begin narrowing down your results.
You might have noticed that some of the results at the top of the list aren’t as closely related to what you are after as you are hoping. So, if you click on the ‘Keyword (by relevance’, it will begin automatically re-sorting your results to begin showing the most relevant results at the top.
5. How to figure out which SEO keywords to use
The next step on using the Google Keyword Planner for SEO purposes is to begin figuring out exactly how to read the results on the keyword generator. Now, the best way on how to use the Google Keyword Planner is to pay attention to the following things…
- Average Monthly Searches: This will show you exactly how many times a keyword or phrase is searched for every month. The higher the number, the more people are typing that keyword or phrase into the search engine. However, it is not enough to just simply look at the number of people searching for specific keywords/phrases every month. There are a lot of other things you need to take into consideration too.
- Competition: This is an extremely important aspect that you need to pay close attention to as well. This is because even if there are 100,000 people searching for a specific phrase, if the competition for the phrase is extremely high, the likelihood that your article will reach the first page of Google search results is extremely low. So, comparing that to a phrase with a monthly volume of 10,000 and low competition, even though the number of people actually searching for that phrase is lower, the likelihood you will have eyes on your article is a lot higher
6. Select your SEO keywords
Once you have sorted out exactly what you want, be sure to take the necessarily steps to maximize your SEO ‘juice’.
