An Introduction to Affiliate Marketing for Beginners
If you are reading this post, it is highly likely that you have read those inspiring income reports by bloggers and other online entrepreneurs. You might have even gaped at the idea that somebody could earn up to $100,000+ a month. Nope, you don’t need to go to the optometrist because you did see that number right. It is possible to land the big bucks through affiliate marketing for beginners with no experience!
Making money online with affiliate marketing is in my blood. Literally.
Some of you might already well be aware of Mark Ling (my older brother), affiliate marketing guru and founder of Affilorama, the largest affiliate marketing course online. So, naturally, it makes sense that I would weight in my two cents on what affiliate marketing is and why getting started with affiliate marketing is a great idea – especially for those of you who didn’t come from a family of online entrepreneurs.
In a way, consider this post to be my special ‘affiliate marketing for beginners’ blog course! And let me take you on a magical step by step journey on how you can monetize your blog with affiliate marketing as a beginner.
What Is Affiliate Marketing?
When someone types in a question like ‘how to make money off a blog’ or ‘how to make money online’, one of the most popular methods that keep cropping up is affiliate marketing.
Essentially, affiliate marketing is when you promote other people’s products/services (aka. you are the affiliate who works for an affiliate program) and in return, you would receive a
To help you better understand this concept, I have created a little bullet point checklist to show you the exact ‘flow’ of how you make money online with affiliate marketing…
- You create an affiliate marketing website
- Find a product/service that you’d like to promote
- Join the affiliate program of the product/service
- You’ll be given a special tracking code which is called an affiliate link
- You market the affiliate product/service via a variety of means i.e. website, blog posts, eBooks, email marketing campaigns, social media posts etc. (these are the most typical places to promote affiliate products, but you definitely aren’t restricted to these methods – you can literally turn anything into a promotional tool so long as you can place a clickable URL there – the only limit is your own imagination!)
- People click on your affiliate link and some of those people make a purchase
- You earn a commission from the sale (the customer doesn’t pay for this but the company you work as an affiliate for)
Sounds simple enough right?
Well, in order to make money online with affiliate marketing requires a lot more than just that. But let me remind you and clarify to you that affiliate marketing is not a pyramid selling scheme, and it certainly isn’t a get rich quick scheme. Affiliates are usually everyday people trying to find a way to earn some extra money online or they are business minded people looking to find a way to find some earning potential off their website full time so that they can have the luxury from working anywhere in the world at any hour of the day.
How Much Does Affiliate Marketing Cost?
It doesn’t cost you a cent to sign up as an affiliate to an affiliate program and begin promoting their products/services.
However, that being said, you will need to pay for the ‘everyday’ things such as annual website hosting fees, domain names etc.
How Much Money Can You Make From Affiliate Marketing?
You are your own limit.
There is absolutely no limit as to how much money you can make from affiliate marketing.
Some affiliates make only a couple hundred dollars every month while some can make a couple thousand each month, and there will be others who can literally sit in a bathtub, heck, a room of their own cash and make more than six figures every month!
So, the amount that you make with affiliate marketing is heavily dependent on two things…
- Your personal effort and dedication to roll in moolah and
- How solid your affiliate marketing strategy is aka. knowing which products/services to pitch to your audience and knowing exactly how to pitch said products/services to your audience for maximum effect.
What I can tell you is that through my own personal
What Does Affiliate Marketing Involve?
Affiliate marketing is more than just putting a clickable hyperlink up. If you believe that this is all affiliate marketing entails and you aren’t willing to put the effort in to make your online business dream into a reality, then the rest of this blog post is not for you.
So what does affiliate marketing involve? Well, for starters, affiliate marketing involves…
- Finding great products to promote
- Creating a website with a solid marketing strategy
- Conducting market research
- Boosting traffic to your website via search engine optimization
- Finding the newest and most effective ways to promote your products
- Social and email marketing
- PPC (pay per click) marketing
- Building a dedicated email list and curating content for them on a regular basis
- Remaining motivated even when you meet failure after failure because once you get it, you’ll seriously get it.
And guess what?
I have only just touched on the brink of the iceberg. There is so much more that you have to do if you want to make affiliate marketing a solid source of income for yourself. And in the world of affiliate marketing, there is nothing worse than aimlessly wandering about trying a bunch of things that you’ve read about online and investing financially into, only to have none of it bearing results.
I get it, it’s totally sucky!
Luckily for me, I had Mark who always knew what he was doing. With him around, I had someone experienced and successful to teach me how to make money affiliate marketing. He’s an affiliate marketing genius and honestly, it was just at dinner today that he told me about how he came across two of his former Affilorama course enrollers at a Mastermind conference who are now earning SIX blimmin’ figures every month doing affiliate marketing!
All I know is that without his personal guidance, I would have been at a loss as to how to make money online with affiliate marketing. I would probably have had to spend months at a time just trying to understand how the process worked and perhaps undergone huge financial losses before I finally succeeded. That is why I think it is so important to find the best affiliate marketing programs for beginners if you want to begin to make money affiliate marketing.

Create Your Own Affiliate Marketing Blog/Website
Why do you need an affiliate marketing website?
In order to become an affiliate marketer in your own right, you’ll need a platform to market your affiliate products to. The best type of affiliate marketing is one where you will be able to earn passive income i.e. once you have set up a blog/website, you have an associated sales funnel to promote your affiliate products on autopilot. This way, your affiliate sales can happen at any time of the day/night! If you are doing affiliate marketing the right way, you will be able to earn money passively aka. in your sleep. How nifty is that!
How do you make an affiliate marketing website?
- You need to find a web host (which essentially is a platform which allows your website to be ‘live’ and ‘seeable’ by others on the Internet). I recommend SiteGround hands down over BlueHost because it is not only an affordable option, but I have literally seen serious changes in my traffic changes, a boost in positive user experience, quicker page speed responses and SO MUCH MORE.Click here to get your web hosting with SiteGround for just $3.95/month.
- When you have finally paid for your web hosting, follow my step by step beginners guide to create a money making
Types of Affiliate Marketing Website Structures
When you have your affiliate marketing website set up, you need to decide exactly what type of structure you want it to have.
For your benefit, I have written down 3 of the most popular types of affiliate marketing website structures for you to browse through…
1. Personal Blog
This is definitely the most ‘intimate’ of the three options. With a personal blog, you and your face will be a major part of the business every step of the way.
You will be writing to form relationships with your readers and talk about your own personal opinions/experiences/stories relating to the affiliate marketing products/services that you choose to promote.
Essentially, you will be engaging with other bloggers, your readers and audience as yourself and not as a company which helps to give that extra flair of personality to your affiliate marketing business.
I do tend to believe that if you want to make money affiliate marketing via blogging, you need to have a defined niche. For example, if you are a health and fitness blogger, you’ll want to create an audience of dedicated readers who eagerly anticipate hearing about great products/services that relate to health and fitness.
If you are a real ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ kind of blogger, I do believe that you will struggle (although it is not impossible!) to really define yourself as a respected and trusted figure in (insert niche here) affiliate product recommendations. So, I do personally think that the earning potential of a ‘un-niched’ blogger is generally a lot lower.
2. Authority Niche Blogs
This differs from the ‘personal’blog in the sense that this is more of a ‘professional’ blog with a clearly defined niche that your content always revolves around.
This type of blog often teaches a kind of skill/educates your readers about various affiliate products that you promote.
Usually you won’t normally share personal opinions/experiences/stories of yourself like you would on a personal blog, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t showcase your personality to the deepest degree! Because come on, if you’ve got it, flaunt it! 😉 But, your personality on an authority niche blog is definitely often shared in a much more ‘professional’manner.
For any of you wondering, Curated By Michelle is a very ‘personalized’ authority niche blog. (Just because I love writing from the heart and sometimes I can’t quite mask my inner boss girl vibes heh)
3. Authority Niche Websites
A related type of structure to the authority niche blogs is the authority niche websites. In authority niche websites, there isn’t typically a person associated with the website, making it a whole lot more ‘professional’ and whole lot less ‘personal’when it comes to forming relationships with your readers.
However, an authority niche website does similar things to an authority niche blog in the sense that the information shared on the site will be educational and all your articles will be related to a particular niche.
These three types of affiliate marketing websites are definitely the most popular, however, there is another type of affiliate marketing website that has been proven to do really well too…
4. Reviews and Price Comparison Website
On these types of websites, you would be writing reviews of products/services and perhaps even comparing products/services in a way to give consumers more background information about products/services.
This type of website will seem a lot more impersonal, offer less advice and will appear to be unbiased.
A common type of reviews website would be tech websites that compare the various technological models i.e. laptops, cellphones etc. to one another and give a review/recap of each one.
How to Find and Join Affiliate Programs
Once you have decided what type of affiliate marketing website you want to operate, it is time for you to begin creating content.
Before you begin applying to affiliate programs as an affiliate, I highly recommend that you create a few pages of content. This is simply because it will make it a lot easier for you to get ‘in’ with the affiliate programs as it makes you look like a trustworthy, reputable and established website (and not a spamming one!)
I have been a part of a variety of various affiliate networks including ClickBank, Commission Junction, ShareaSale and AWIN. Other ways that you can become an affiliate is simply going to the website of the brand that you want to promote and see whether or not they have an affiliate program that you can join.
Once you have signed up to a few affiliate networks, begin researching their products and then create some amazing blog posts, email campaigns, social media content etc. revolving around those products in order to promote it!
However, this is seriously a lot easier said than done, so here are my best tips on how to actually make money online with affiliate marketing for beginners.
How to Make Money Affiliate Marketing
1. Create informational, educational and helpful content for your readers. No fluff pieces.
2. Provide honest feedback about products/services that you have personally used/are using
3. Always find an opportunity to create more affiliate sales i.e. in your freebies, don’t hesitate to add a few affiliate links.
4. Do not just plaster hyperlinks to affiliate products and expect to have cash rolling in. People need to be convinced, so work hard to create content that showcases why they need the product/service.
There are definitely plenty of other tips to follow if you want to make money online with affiliate marketing, but hopefully this taster is enough to sustain you (for now!)
Why It’s So Amazing to Support Bloggers/Affiliate Marketing Websites
Ya know, sometimes, I just like to go to one of my favourite bloggers/affiliate marketer’s websites because at the end of the day, these people aren’t large corperations, they work super hard to try and recommend products/services that they think that their readers/audience will benefit from.
The fact that my sale is making a fellow blogger/affiliate out there wiggle his/her toes in glee because of how much my purchase means to them is enough to get me to spend just an extra two seconds to click on their link. And it costs you (as the consumer) absolutely nothing to help brighten up your favourite blogger’s/affiliate’s face.
I seriously don’t believe that any large corperation will care so much if you bought their product from them directly.
Who wouldn’t like to see another blogger/affiliate marketer do a little jiggly dance in their living room? 😉
